Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera will not travel to Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis, and he will not vote in the conclave due to health reasons, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid confirmed to ABC News.
Cardinal Canizares Llovera is 79 years old, so he is eligible to vote in the conclave.
This is the second cardinal eligible to participate in the conclave who has announced they will not participate due to health reasons. Cardinal Vinko Puljić announced he would not participate in the conclave due to health reasons on Monday, according to ANSA, Italian state media.
Cardinal Canizares Llovera is one of five cardinals from Spain who have the right to vote in the upcoming conclave.
There are 252 cardinals total, but only 135 cardinals can vote for the next pope. With two eligible cardinals now saying they will not participate in the conclave due to health reasons, that leaves 133 cardinals eligible to vote in the upcoming conclave to elect the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.
