Thursday’s big stock stories: What’s likely to move the market in the next trading session

Here’s what CNBC TV’s producers were watching as the Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time since 2023 and what’s on the radar for the next session. Jobless claims The weekly number comes out 8:30 a.m. on ” Squawk Box ” with Becky Quick, Joe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin. The Dow Jones consensus estimate is for 207,000 initial claims. The prediction market website Kalshi shows 72% of people participating in this category believe the number will be above the 200,000 estimate, while 22% think it’ll be above 210,000. Housing starts The August number comes out at 8:30 a.m. and the “Squawk” team will also be all over this. The experts say we’ll see 1.3 million, which is an increase of 4.9% from the previous month. CNBC TV’s Diana Olick covers housing and will have all the details and any potential stock impact. Take-Two Interactive virtual annual shareholder meeting The video-game maker, which owns Rockstar Games, will be holding its annual shareholder meeting Thursday. The much anticipated and long-delayed “Grand Theft Auto VI” scheduled to be released on Nov. 19. TTWO is down 17% in 2026. “Grand Theft Auto V” was released on Sept. 17, 2013. TTWO was a $17 stock at the time. It closed Wednesday at $211.81, a gain of over 1,100%. The stock could use a boost as it’s down 14.5% in the last 12 months and is 20% off its July 7 high of $265.94. CNBC Julia Boorstin will be monitoring the event for news. TTWO YTD mountain Take-Two Interactive in 2026 Software in the spotlight Hubspot and Intuit are also holding investor days Thursday. HUBS is down 41% in 2026 but has gained 29% in the last three months. INTU is down almost 52% in 2026 and is up 13% in the last three months. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) has been a wild ride of late and is now down 0.69% this year. The ETF has seen a 12% gain in the last two months. Some of the IGV big winners the last three months: Atlassian , up 116% Docusign , up 58.5% Salesforce , up 55% IGV soft spots the last three months: TeraWulf , down 45% Core Scientific , down almost 40% AppLovin , off 36% CNBC’s Seema Mody will be watching these events for us.
